Replaces the first part of the course A-36.3500/A-36.500
Aims:
- to acquaint students with new contexts and cultures
- to develop skills in adapting to a new professional situation
- to develop the understanding of causes that have led to a specific context
- to develop the students' value system and sense of responsibility
Started in1993 as “Interplay of Cultures” with field work in Senegal , continued since 2000 as “World Architecture and Planning” (vs. World music…) with annual field work periods in Benin.
A university is primarily teaching and not implementing development projects. The objective is to learn to understand the realities of life and the conditions of professional work in a developing country of the South. Our interests are:
- enculturation of students
- academic work of a university
- dentification of projects
The local community sees that project ideas can be an outcome which should be used and further developed by them; “We need dreams”. If viable projects are identified, financing can be sought on the basis of proposals prepared through student work. The best example of this is the women's centre in Rufisque , Senegal , “The Red House” carried out by three former students of the course and largely published in world architectural press.
Requirements
Lectures, seminars, and approved completion of written assignments. The course includes a voluntary field work period abroad. The course is part of the Department’s International Architecture Program.
